Black Square Gallery will be the host of this year’s MIA Launch Party in celebration of the art fair this year. The SPACES exhibition by Ukrainian artist Nazar Bilyk will mark its grand opening for this Saturday’s Art Walk in the Wynwood District and will run through February 10, 2011.

“A person can’t be separate from what surrounds him and continually interacts with his environment,” says Bilyk of his work in SPACES. In SPACES, he uses a variety of materials – glass, plastic, bronze – to create visions of space and ask what our relationship to it is. He poses such questions as “Do we create our surroundings, our own barriers, or are they imposed?”and ” How do we react to them?”

Both emotional and psychological borders and interactions become physical ones in the sculptures which Nazar created for this exposition. He uses traditional techniques in his contemporary sculptures as well as unusual mix of polymer resins and glass (“Rain”), bronze and polymer resins (“Confined Space”), bronze and ceramic plaster (“Transformation”). His modern story is academically perfect, or breaks the rules when he creates ragged and welded, painted with signs and formulas figures. The event will be in part sponsored by Black River Caviar.

Art, to be called modern, has to keep up with today, yesterday and tomorrow, complying with the spirit of the age, while taking in and reflecting the most important and characteristic elements of the time. Nazar Bilyk, a young artist from Kyiv, can by rights be characterised as just such a tomorrow-facing artist where his newest project entitled Enclosure is like a well of fresh water sprung up from a stagnant pond.

The occurrence of new ideas and the artistic implementation of said ideas are both things Ukrainian audiences have been yearning for for some time. The problem is that the realisation of one or the other is seldom provided, as many of our current creators, obediently following the safe and boring classics, continue to make little headway. Regularly held art-festivals and art-shows provide direct evidence of this where the needs and expectations of modern art admirers are rarely met with anything inspiring. Instead, they find archaic and, in certain senses, old fashioned art which too often interprets or quotes things that have already been said dozens of times over. This, it is hoped, is a trend on the way out. Or certainly seems to be the case with upcoming artist and sculptor Nazar Bilyk.

Reframing Your Mindset

Sculpture has itself been on a long journey to becoming its own recognised and independent art form. Once seen as a simple auxiliary material in the interpretation of liturgical procedures, it has since been released from church walls gradually gaining space, and has begun revolutionising not only the art world but the world in general.
With this in mind, this new project brought forth by Nazar Bilyk can be called an absolute victory of modern sculpting. Not only has he been able to solidify his idea by bringing it to life, the method and means he has used to reconcile these two opposing elements – form and space – was made with great risk, deliberately and forever enclosing them by means of fusion. Unique and innovative, these artificially created spaces will forever be subdued one to the other, and as such, Bilyk is considered well in advance of his contemporaries.
One of the things he says about the process itself is that, “It is paradoxically impossible to describe the environment of a sculpture by its own means. Fixing, grasping, freezing and presenting it in a three-dimensional manner is not a task of sculpting. On the contrary, due to its expressiveness, each sculpture strives to conquer space by exposing as much of it as possible which is why my attempt at something called ‘double-framing’ has opened new possibilities in this sphere.”
This work is amazingly expressive and creates an atmosphere of an open airspace wherever it is exhibited. And yet while the volume plasticity of the work is unbelievably natural and laconic, perhaps the major role in the work of this sculptor is played by the material as well as the technique and treatment of it.
When creating Rain for example, Bilyk’s first encounter with volume and environment, he incorporated a polymeric material into his creation; one of the first times both he or any other Ukrainian sculptor had used such a substance. “Polymeric material is perfect as far as its properties are concerned,” he said after working on this first project. “It is flexible, endurable, lightweight and colour-friendly, making it possible to experiment with such forms and making the piece of art more expressive and interesting.”

Stuck in Polymer

With regard to subsequent works, the maestro has since allowed the volume created by the sculpture to be completely devoured by the environment it inhabits making an artificial vacuum formed by the polymeric material. By folding, closing and at first glance limiting the space around the sculpture, the artist solders them together into a single being, and in doing so creates an absolutely new work of art. What is most interesting is that in applying such a technique, no two pieces are ever replicated, and new artistic effects with regard to texture, colouring and mood appear each time,
Preserving the philosophy of his worldview, Nazar Bilyk says, “I have made an attempt to make a dialogue between spectators and sculptures more sophisticated by adding symbolic translucent volumetric shapes, gradually opening the sculpture to beholders and making it impossible to see the figures unambiguously. While beholding compositions from different angles, spectators can see reflections and projections of sculptures on the translucent glass planes creating the illusion that several similar entities are present.”

Ambiguity and inconsistency accompanied at the same time by depression, limitation and restraint are all the diagnoses of a modern human-being, each of which lurks in works put forth by Nazar Bilyk. In his piece entitled Therein where this is readily seen, the artist exposes and demonstrates, in an astonishingly accurate and ingenious way, the essence of a modern tired, worn-out, reserved and lost human being. The sculpture depicts a man’s figure directed towards an engulfing abyss of obscurity into which he literally dives head first up to his shoulders. But instead of the long wished for and expected freedom, the poor character is entrapped and is literally stuck in and smothered by an obscure and nebulous future which he – helpless, restrained, blinded, deafened and mute – is compelled to bear from now until his end. This sculpture can safely be regarded as an artistic visualisation of today’s painful problem of the 21st century mass ‘psychological suicide’, as every day millions of us are caught in such psychological traps. Depicted as a polymeric semi-translucent cube, Bilyk has used this to portray how we absorb unbelievable amounts of negative information, we buy into political deceits, and we support the waging of World War III (called an information-psychological war) delivered to us all by our cubic-shaped television sets.

Beautiful Imperfections

The work entitled The Rain 2 is another perfect example that interprets the emotional and spiritual inconsistency of man. The sculpture shows a fragile, senile and seemingly half-ruined pieced-together figure carefully sheltered by the artist in a translucent and engulfing timelessness of mysterious polymeric material. The effect of this ruined figure is ensured by the polymeric material texture which also happens to be the epicentre of this piece, culminating in an interaction of space and character with various shades of colour refracting the light in numerous aerial cavities. It is the result that makes this piece so incredibly interesting, whereby during the process of unifying these two sculptural elements aerial cavities are also formed, and these end up being an indispensable means in bringing this artistic image to life, and as such, the caught air is also considered an important creative material.

Another place this is perfectly demonstrated is in the amazingly beautiful work entitled The Enclosure which shows a female figure immersed in crystalline resin with gliding air stiffened all over the sculpture’s surface. Visually, the air resembles silver plates that once embraced the contours of antique monuments or, for instance, thin enamel that has for centuries served as ornament to articles of jewellery.

Looking into the world of Nazar Bilyk we are able to see that his incredible artistic discovery is something, in fact, quite special. He has succeeded in uniting two absolutely priceless components: the actual idea along with classical art, which fairly gives him the title of successful and promising contemporary artist. Because of what he has accomplished, he will not simply fall into oblivion once the order of the day changes. For he is not just one of the newbies in the swift-flowing order of the day, he, is an innovator.
